On Saturday night, Alexa's roommate Morna, who is from Glasgow, took a few of us on a "small" pub crawl. We went to Frankenstein, Vodka Revolution and another place on South Bridge. It was a lot of fun. We all sat around, got to know each other and laughed about the past couple of days, while singing and dancing to American music.
When I was on the plane over, I was thinking about the movie
Made of Honor. If you haven't seen it before, it is with Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan. It is about these two friends (Dempsey and Monaghan) and Dempsey realizes he is in love with his best friend, who happens to be marrying a Scottish Lad. To cut to the chase, and not drag on like Sary, there is this scene in the movie when Monagahan goes to a number of pubs for her bachelorette party and while she is there all the men kiss her and give her money. I was wondering if they actually do this or not; making it my mission to find out.
Well...

I completed my mission. While at Frankenstein a group of about eight lassies walked in and one happened to be the BRIDE!! She was wearing a small vail, had these cards, and an L on her back. I asked if it was a bachelorette party and I was quickly told its called A Hen Party. Soo as usual being a Marsh I walked up to her and asked a few questions and if I could get a picture with her!

It is called A Hen Party. The L on her back stands for a learning bride. I asked what do you mean by "learning" and she said to shag and I started
dieing laughing. One of her braidsmades informed me that about 10 years ago the bride would walk around with a baby's bonnet and men would through money in there so she would come home to her future husband with some money. We talked a little bit longer, ended up dancing with them and were even invited to go on their bus with them to the other pubs!!
We politely declined, since none of us where dressed to go dancing. But we happened to see them at the next pub we went to. They came right up to us and said "Oh! Our American friends" and give us all hugs and kisses.
I now need a new mission...any suggestions?
Good to see you are getting in to the swing to things. Over in Glasgow a hen party will normally have pots and pans to bang.
ReplyDeleteSo, have you been to a ceilidh yet?
If not, then that your next mission.... I expect you to become proficient in Strip the Willow and the Gay Gordons....
Chels!
ReplyDeleteI tried posting a comment earlier and it failed. Let me try again...
Awesome that you were included in the hen night. Now your are true Scottish hen! I think this tradition needs to be incorporated into your students curriuculum...worth a few laughs.
I also suggest that you learn how to dance like a Scot. The Scots at Dartmouth used to do these funny group dances at parties. It was always hilarious.
Have fun!
XO
They weren't hilarious, they were traditional!
ReplyDeleteHi Chelsey!
ReplyDeleteAnd welcome to Scotland! Nick sent me the link to your blog - I was at Dartmouth at the same time as Nick and Jane, and I'm now living back in Scotland...
and I agree with Nick, your next mission has to be a ceilidh and you need to find a nice Scottish man with a kilt to dance with! :)
And yep, a group of us used to do some ceilidh dancing at parties at Dartmouth (i'd forgotten all about that Jane), but they were great fun!
Hope you to continue to enjoy Edinburgh!
Hazel
I will definitely try a ceilidh dance. We have the opportunity in either February or March to go to an event. I will let you all know how great of a dancer I become!
ReplyDeleteHazel! Good to hear from you and nice of you to join my "not-so wee" niece's blog!
ReplyDeleteHow the heck do you pronounce ceilidh?
Chels, Have you gotten the Marsh tartan yet? Is there one?!
ceilidh is pronounced 'KAY-LEE' - but then again, I am English, so what do I know?
ReplyDeleteHellloooo again!
ReplyDeleteand Jane, its lovely to "chat" with you on your niece's blog - hope you are doing great!
and yep, nickers - depsite the fact that he is english, is spot on with the pronuniciation of ceilidh!!
maybe you can find a good Burns supper to go to and that way you can combine ceilidh dancing with eating haggis, neeps & tatties!
enjoy!
Hazel,
ReplyDeleteYou must define all those items in American cuisine terms lest my poor niece poison herself!
I forgot about Burns night...when is it? Coming up in February, right?
I went to a Burns Night celebration here in Pittsburgh a while back. Seems there was a bit of Scotch Whiskey as I recall and funny poems being read. May have been a man in a kilt as well...
Burn's Night is the 25th January. Haggis is lovely! (But, you really don't want to know what is in it.) Neeps is what I would call a swede (an orange coloured root vegetable), but some people call a turnip. You eat it mashed. Tatties are potatoes. And are usually served mashed with the haggis.
ReplyDeleteGoogle it before you eat it...
ReplyDeletehehe Jane!!
ReplyDeleteprobably that is wise - but it really is - honest!
and very good culinary explanations Nick...
btw, did i ever tell you that i was going to make haggis from scratch for a Burns Supper in Hanover one year - so i went to the COOP foodstore to ask if they could get me all the ingredients.....alas, the poor butcher just shook his head and told me i would have to go to the slaughterhouse in Sharon, VT if i wanted those parts! Needless to say i didn't make it! :)
oops i missed out the word "delicious" in my 2nd sentence - before the word "honest" !!
ReplyDelete:)
I like Haggis. Very tasty. Haggis Pakora is particularly good.....
